Alec Bohm – Philly’s newest sensation

Going into the 2020 season there was one name, other than JT of course, that was drawing a lot of attention in the Phillies’ fanbase; Alec Bohm. For a long time now the Phillies have been looking for someone to make the hot corner their own, they’d hoped Maikel Franco would take the spot but things didn’t pan out. After a Minor League career with a lot of success, Bohm looked to have all the talent needed to give the Phillies a successful Third Baseman. He showed flashes of this in Clearwater, before the pandemic shut down spring training, and as the season got up and running, it was only a matter of time before he was making his debut.

Bohm made his debut on August 13 against the Baltimore Orioles, going 1-4 and picking up his first hit, a double.

This was just the beginning of Alec Bohm’s rise, he showed time and time again he’s a pure hitter. He finished the season with 4 HRs, 23 RBIs, a whopping .338 BA, .400 OBP, .481 SLG and a .881 OPS, so pretty damn good! He led NL rookies in RBIs, batting average, tied 1st for go ahead RBIs and tied 1st for game winning RBIs, 2nd in doubles and extra base hits, 2nd in OPS, 2nd in runs, 3rd in home runs and tied 1st in hits, so it was most certainly a robbery that he wasn’t awarded Rookie Of the Year.

So what exactly can we expect from Bohm going forward? Well whilst he’s not a golden glove defender, he showed improvements as the season went on and has the potential to be solid enough. But that’s not what we really care about when it comes to Bohm. The X factor with Alec is the hitting, and boy is he good at it. He’s the type of hitter that you expect to get a hit whenever he’s up to bat. He can hit for power, singles or doubles. Think Freddie Freeman and how almost every time he plays the Phillies he goes 4-4, well we have our very own Freddie, a pure hitter.

Not only can he hit, but he comes in clutch. Like in the example below, the last strike of the last out at the end of a 7 inning double header, runners on third and second. A single ties the game, a deep enough hit and aggressive base running could walk it off. So what does Bohm do? He gets the hit and drives both runners in.

He showed this time and time again, and it’s something that will only get better in time. Bohm is going to be a very dominant bat at the top of the Phillies line-up for years to come and is a perfect compliment to Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins and (hopefully) JT Realmuto.

It sure does feel nice to have a guy like Alec Bohm on our team doesn’t it?
